Foundational skills are fundamental in kindergarten. In reading that includes phonemic awareness skills such as: rhyming, letter sounds, blending sounds (orally), segmenting sounds (orally), and phoneme manipulation. Phonics skills include: reading cvc words, nonsense words, and writing cvc words, and writing letter names. When these are mastered, we move into reading shared stories that makes use of all of these skills. Combining a list of 40 sight words they will learn enables them to use their letter/sound knowledge to be fluent readers.
Students will be fluent in their use of numbers 0-5 with basic facts, number sentences, number bonds, etc.
Learning to get along with peers is also a vital part of kindergarten and is addressed with lessons all year long.
